Russia has always been that faction to me who just sits on the edge of the map and never really accomplishes anything, so I never really paid them any attention. No wonder, as their early game troops are seriously garbage.

Archer militia with 5 missile damage, spear militia without cav bonus (like western town militia) and weak missile cav along with mercs. But if you are able to build up. The Dismounted Dvor are insane (11 missile, 11 melee, 15 armor, with shield, and long range missiles) and won repeatedly against DFK and DCK when I tested them 1 on 1, even when their general died first, every time.

They can fill the role of both archers and infantry, and they have a maximum avalability of 6 from the lvl 4 Range, so they are very plentiful. They only have 1 spear unit, who is equal to Armoured Sergeants, but honestly - aside from pikes, do you ever use any other spear unit anyway? They get arqs from lvl 6 city barracks, and muskets from lvl 7s, which saves you about 12000 florins and 10 turns of building. They are also the highest damage musket unit in the game, 17 missile, which is equal to janissaries. Druzhina (castle lvl heavy cav) is slightly higher in stats than both mailed knights and feudal knights, with lower charge rating. They're a cross between feudal knights and huscarls, and do just as well in melee as charges.

Boyar sons are excellent medium cav similar to polish nobles. Dvors are also fantastic long range missile cav who do well in melee, and cossack cavalry are great too. The Tsars Guard top tier cav is the cav with the highest attack/defence in the game (14/19) and are only matched by tutkish Quapukulu due to their armor piercing attack. I am honestly blown away by this - the end game russians have by far the most powerful unit roster I have ever played.

Truly an underrated faction. Anyone else share this impression? Russia is a strong force late game.

Early game they are laughably run over in almost every situation. Mitigate the disadvantage with the land; build roads and lots of horse units for the rebels. Get trade routes and get as much land as soon as possible.

Russian land tends(from my personal experience) to be poor so try and not get into long drawn wars with Poland, HRE and Denmark. I usually stop until I make a 'wall' of zones to the west, build castles there. To the east I build cities and one or two castles at the bottleneck(towards the green guys). Use the spearmen they have specifically to just suck up damage, let the horse units attack from the sides and behind.

Archers are weak. Not much use for them unfortunately so try and stick with spear/horse units unless for keep defense. Use archers if you have them for keep defense, they are not very good for field battles.
