In this fourth series of the hell-raising Wishmaster, the Djinn unleashes his undying love and three wishes on a beautiful new victim named Lisa, whose crucial third wish is one that the Wishmaster cannot fulfill without leaving a trail of terror, devastation and blood in his wake. The evil brotherhood of the Djinns shall awaken from the flames of Hell. As the third wish is made, humankind had better be prepared for the apocalypse. Woken up once again, the repulsive Djinn returns to wreck the life of more innocent victims with his deadly fulfillments.
In order to prevent the release of the evil brotherhood of the Djinns from Hell, Lisa must find a way to destroy the Djinn to stop the prophecy from being fulfilled. Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy Fulfilled (2002) ** (out of 4) The fourth and (so far) final film in the series has Djinn (John Novak) taking over the body of a lawyer so that he can make his client Lisa (Tara Spencer-Nairn) ask for three wishes, which will fulfill the evil one's prophecy. It appears there are fans out there of the first WISHMASTER movie and it appears some of them are lukewarm when it comes to the first sequel. After that, it appears those same fans hate parts three and four with a real passion so perhaps my not liking the first film made these direct-to-video sequels seem not as bad. I'm not going to sit here and say that this film is a lost masterpiece or some sort of classic that people from all walks of life should seek out.
This film is very far from being good but when you compare it to the majority of the direct-to-video films from this era I think this film offers quite a bit. For starters, those who hate fake looking CGI blood will be happy to know that this film offers real special effects and quite gory ones at that. The gore level here is quite high so blood fans should at least be entertained by this aspect of the film.
We're given a couple really graphic death scenes including the highlight of the movie where a lawyer is forced to pretty much torture himself and this leads to all sort of gore. Another major plus going for the film is that the lead actress isn't afraid to take off her clothes. These type of horror films never deliver heart-warming stories or Oscar-winning performances so it's good that this delivers in other ways and that is the gore and nudity. I also didn't think the performances were all that bad with Spencer-Narin making for a good lead and at least she's watchable. The supporting players aren't too bad either with Novak once again doing a good job with the lead of the demon. The problems are what you'd expect to find in a film like this and that's the unoriginal story, too long of a running time and the fact that there's just really not much going on. Still, fans of gore and nudity should at least find enough of that here to keep the film entertaining.
Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy fulfilled is the third sequel to the original Wishmaster and the fourth and final film in the series. Wishmaster 3 was pretty awful, it basically ruined just about everything that made the first two enjoyable, so what else could go wrong? It’s only up from here right?
Apparently there was essentially a weekend between the filming of the third and fourth which indicates to me that Artisan Entertainment were looking to milk any value the Wishmaster name still had to it while there was anything left to milk. Andrew Divoff is absent once again (can you blame him) so we’re stuck with John Novak as the Djinn for a second time. We all know how this works by now right? An evil Djinn is released from his prison – an ancient jewel – and must grant three wishes to the person who awakens him, in order to release the race of Djinns from hell and allow them to take over the earth. Painter Sam (Jason Thompson) and his girlfriend Lisa (Tara Spencer-Nairn) have just moved in together when he has a terrible accident that leaves him crippled for life.
Determined to help him sue the organization responsible for his accident, Lisa retains a lawyer, Steven (Michael Trucco), who has a crush on her and doesn’t hide it. Sensing Sam’s growing distance from Lisa, Steven moves in, awkwardly offering as a gift a jewel he found hidden away in an antique desk. The jewel, unknown to Steven, is the Djinn’s cell. Lisa inadvertently awakens the Djinn, which secretly kills Steven and takes his form. The Djinn/Steven begins making advances on Lisa to trick her into making wishes.
